BEML launches prototype for driverless metro trainsets for BMRCL

BEML Ltd., a prominent Indian rail and metro train manufacturer, has inaugurated the prototype manufacturing of its driverless Metro trainsets for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). This development is part of the 5RS-DM Project, which covers Lines 2 and 6, including the Bengaluru Airport Line.

BEML secured the contract in August 2023, valued at Rs 31.77 billion, for designing, manufacturing, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning 53 trainsets. The project also includes a comprehensive 15-year maintenance service.

The new trainsets will feature a six-car formation, designed and developed by BEML’s engineering teams in Bengaluru. Constructed from high-tensile austenitic stainless steel, these trainsets aim to provide durability, safety, and enhanced passenger comfort. Each car will be equipped with two roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners for effective climate control.

Additional features include an IP-based Passenger Announcement (PA) system, Passenger Information System (PIS), and a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS), which will provide real-time station information via an LCD-based Dynamic Route Map display. For safety, the trains will have electrically driven automatic doors synchronised with Platform Screen Doors.
