At Dana, sustainability is a guiding vision and not just a goal

Dana, a leading global provider of mobile drivetrain and motion solutions, has been supporting the growth of its customers in India's light vehicle, commercial vehicle and off-highway segments for more than 60 years. By delivering cutting-edge clean-energy technologies, Dana actively assist its customers in achieving their sustainability goals, says Gajanan Gandhe, Country Head and Vice President of Dana India, who was recently bestowed with IIT-Bombay’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements. In this interview with Rakesh Rao, Gajanan Gandhe explains how the auto component manufacturer is helping auto makers in achieving their Net Zero goals.

How is the auto and auto component manufacturing sector adjusting to the requirements to mitigate effects of climate change?
Climate change awareness is prompting the auto industry to shift towards eco-friendly practices. Electric and hybrid vehicles are gaining prominence, emphasising a reduction in carbon emissions. Additionally, there's a growing focus on lightweight materials and sustainable manufacturing methods to minimise environmental impact.

What steps are being taken by Dana to achieve the objectives of sustainability?
At Dana, we are deeply committed to sustainability across all facets of our operations. Recently recognised as one of the '2023 World’s Most Ethical Companies' by Ethisphere, we are proud to be among the select few honorees in the mobility industry.

In alignment with global efforts to combat climate change, we have set ambitious goals, aiming to achieve net zero by 2040. Our commitment extends to a more than 75 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, reinforcing our dedication to environmental responsibility.

Our proactive stance towards a zero-emissions future has positioned us as a first-mover in electrification. We strategically invest in technical competence, producing components for complete e-Propulsion systems in-house. A significant portion of our new business comes from driving innovation in next-generation clean-energy technologies, reflecting our commitment to advancing sustainability.

Joining the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), a global 'gold standard' organisation, validates our ambitious, science-based emissions reduction targets. In 2022, SBTi validated our climate commitments, and we continue to work closely with member organizations such as Carbon Disclosure Project, United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and Worldwide Fund for Nature to drive sustainable best practices.

At Dana, sustainability is not just a goal; it's a guiding vision that powers our industry leadership and shapes our contributions to a zero-carbon economy. We operate near our customers all around the world, our global footprint shortens outbound delivery times, reduces the need for shipping, and enhances supply chain security. Our global team manages and tracks logistics across the entire supply chain. By optimising our supply chain and the transportation required, we reduce our carbon footprint — and yours.

Companies across industries are taking steps towards sustainability. How is Dana helping its customers (the auto makers) to achieve their Net Zero emission targets?
At Dana, we understand the importance of contributing to our customers' Net Zero emission targets and aligning with their sustainability objectives. Operating near our customers globally, we actively reduce carbon footprints by minimising delivery distances. Our strategic repositioning focuses on supporting our customers' clean energy priorities.
By delivering cutting-edge clean-energy technologies that power vehicles and machines worldwide, we actively assist our customers in achieving their sustainability goals. This not only aligns with their priorities but also contributes to the reduction of our global Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.
Dana's extensive global network, consisting of 23 technology centers across 9 countries, plays a crucial role in fostering innovation in collaboration with our customers. We believe in being close to the source of innovation to better understand and meet our customers' evolving needs.
In addition to ongoing internal stakeholder engagement, we prioritise open communication with external stakeholders. Regular interaction on trending and emerging issues through inquiries, information requests related to our ESG practices, and periodic surveys, conducted at the request of various customers and investors, allows us to stay responsive to the concerns that matter most to our stakeholders. This approach ensures that our actions are not only in line with our own sustainability goals but also resonate with the priorities of our valued customers.

With the country aiming to become a global manufacturing hub, how critical will be “green engineering/manufacturing (sustainability)” practices for India to gain competitive advantage in the global marketplace?
Green engineering and sustainability practices are not just ideals but imperative for India to secure a formidable standing in the global marketplace. Aligning with international environmental standards, India has witnessed a surge in eco-friendly initiatives. According to recent data, the country has seen a remarkable increase in green certifications for businesses, showcasing a growing commitment to sustainable practices. As the global demand for environmentally conscious products rises, Indian companies embracing green engineering not only contribute to a healthier planet but also tap into a burgeoning market of conscious consumers, creating a compelling competitive edge.
Furthermore, the incorporation of green skills into academic frameworks and government initiatives like the Green Skill Development Programme further support this transformative journey.
The current landscape of green jobs is also poised for growth in the coming years, as companies grow highly ESG compliant and help achieve India’s goal of net zero emissions by the year 2070.

How important is the role of modern technologies & automation in improving competitiveness and green manufacturing capabilities of Indian manufacturers?
The urgency for Indian manufacturers to adopt modern technologies and automation is underscored by tangible benefits. Statistics reveal that companies integrating Industry 4.0 technologies, including AI and robotics, have experienced a significant reduction in energy consumption and material waste. This not only enhances competitiveness but also positions these companies as leaders in sustainable manufacturing practices. The intersection of technology and environmental responsibility not only transforms business landscapes but also solidifies India's presence as a forward-thinking player on the global stage.
