Amazon surpasses 1.1 GW RE Milestone in India with New Wind Farm

Amazon has unveiled plans for a new 198-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, India, marking its 50th renewable energy project in the country and pushing its total renewable energy capacity past 1.1 gigawatts (GW). This initiative solidifies Amazon's position as the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy worldwide, a title it has held since 2020. The company's wind and solar projects in India have not only positioned it as the leading corporate buyer of renewable energy in the country but have also spurred economic growth.

Between 2014 and 2022, Amazon's renewable energy ventures in India have generated approximately $349 million (Rs 2,885 crore) in economic investments for local communities. These projects have also contributed around $87 million (Rs 719 crore) to India's gross domestic product (GDP) and supported over 20,600 local full-time equivalent jobs in 2022 alone, according to Amazon's economic model.

Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, emphasised the importance of rapidly scaling renewable energy efforts, especially in India, where transitioning away from fossil fuels is a national priority. Amazon aims to power all its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, while simultaneously boosting local economies and creating jobs.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in the Government of India welcomed Amazon's investments, acknowledging the positive impact on India's renewable energy sector. Amazon's commitment to sustainability includes not only renewable energy projects but also investments in cloud infrastructure, carbon footprint reduction through AWS migration, electrification of its delivery fleet, and nature-based projects to enhance climate resilience and biodiversity.

Overall, Amazon's multifaceted approach underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship and aligns with The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040.
