Aleees-Taiwan, IFFCO partner to boost non-Chinese Li battery production globally

Aleees-Taiwan, an advanced lithium electrochemistry subsidiary of Lithium intellectual property service provider Aleees-Ky, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), the largest global and Indian manufacturer of phosphoric acid and chemical fertilisers.

The agreement aims to explore the transfer of technology from Aleees to IFFCO, enabling the production and establishment of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cathode material plants in India and Jordan. The goal is to address the substantial non-Chinese demand for lithium batteries in the electric vehicle and energy storage industries, fostering collaboration to strengthen the lithium battery sector in Europe, the United States, and the India-Pacific region. This initiative seeks to mitigate the risk associated with multinational customers relying heavily on China.

IFFCO, a major player in chemical fertiliser production, operates five factories in India and two overseas. In the 2022-2023 financial year, the group achieved a turnover of 62.99 billion rupees (GBP$620 million/$758 million) with a profit after tax of 30.53 billion rupees (GBP$300 million/$368 million). The company's chemical production, including urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertiliser (NPK), and water-soluble fertiliser (WSF), has seen significant growth.

Apart from its core fertiliser business, IFFCO has diversified into various sectors such as general insurance, rural retail, farm forestry, rural telecommunications, agrochemicals, rural finance, logistics, food processing, organics, and urban gardening nutrients.

Aleees and IFFCO are also exploring opportunities to establish factories in Jordan, benefiting from the US-Jordan Free Trade Agreement. The LFP produced by the Jordanian factory is slated for supply to the U.S. market, with end customers enjoying subsidies and tax credits under the US IRA Act. Additionally, Jordan, a reliable supplier of fertilisers and phosphates to the United States, has a joint venture project worth $860 million with IFFCO and JPMorgan Chase for phosphoric acid production.

Aleees, specialising in lithium intellectual property licensing and technology transfer, focuses on developing and certifying customised products with end customers. The company collaborates with international electric vehicle manufacturers to promote lithium iron phosphate LFP cathode material technology licensing in Europe, the United States, India, and Australia. Licensees are responsible for meeting production capacity demands in the Ex-China market and fulfilling local production needs for standard production lines in multiple regions.

Participating manufacturers are expanding gradually, with three battery material companies in Europe, the United States, and Australia, which have completed licensing authorisation, initiating factory construction activities to expedite mass production.
