Airbus expands Indian operations, expects surge in jobs and collaborations

Airbus, the European aircraft manufacturer, and its suppliers are expecting a substantial increase in the number of jobs they support in the coming years. Currently, Airbus and its supply chain contribute to nearly 10,000 jobs in India, and this number is anticipated to rise to approximately 15,000 by 2025, according to a statement released by the company.

The company has recently entered into contracts with several firms, including Aequs, Dynamatic, Gardner, and Mahindra Aerospace, for the production of components for their commercial aircraft. These companies will be responsible for manufacturing and supplying airframe and wing parts for Airbus' A320neo, A330neo, and A350 jets. Although specific details about the size of these contracts were not disclosed by Airbus, these agreements are expected to augment the existing annual procurement of components and services worth $750 million from India.

R?mi Maillard, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, emphasised the significance of India as a strategic resource hub for both human capital and aerospace components and services. He highlighted that "Make in India" is central to Airbus' strategy in the country, expressing pride in the establishment of an integrated industrial ecosystem that positions India as a leading aerospace manufacturing nation.

Additionally, Airbus has forged partnerships to enhance the academic and industrial landscape in India. In March, the company awarded a contract to Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) for the production of cargo doors for A320neo family planes, utilising cutting-edge robotics and automation technology. Furthermore, Airbus signed a memorandum of understanding with Vadodara-based Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) in September, focusing on research, teaching, training, and collaboration with international institutes to deepen students' understanding of aerospace-related scientific, technological, and management topics.
