Adani Total Gas launches green hydrogen blending pilot project, collab with TotalEnergies

Adani Total Gas announced the commencement of a pilot project for the production and blending of green hydrogen. In collaboration with TotalEnergies, the company plans to utilise cutting-edge technologies to blend green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, catering to over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Green hydrogen, generated through the electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources, will be seamlessly integrated with natural gas. This blending approach offers a less carbon-intensive alternative to traditional gas combustion while maintaining equivalent heating capabilities.

The project is scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25. Initially, the percentage of green hydrogen in the blend will be modest, gradually increasing to reach up to 8% or more, contingent upon regulatory approvals.

Upon successful completion of the pilot phase, the hydrogen-blended fuel will be progressively supplied to larger sections of the city and other licensed areas of Adani Total Gas. Studies suggest that an 8% hydrogen blend has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 4%.

Emphasising its commitment to environmental sustainability, the company aims to collaborate with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share insights gained from the pilot and contribute to the development of an ecosystem for hydrogen blending in city gas distribution in India. Suresh P Manglani, CEO of Adani Total Gas, expressed the company's dedication to building an environmentally sustainable operation, reducing the carbon footprint, and advancing sustainable energy solutions. He added that the project aligns with their commitment to support India's goal of achieving energy independence by 2047.
