Acer, Asustek boost manufacturing operations in India amidst stricter import rules

Two prominent Taiwanese PC manufacturers, Acer and Asustek, have unveiled their intentions to amplify manufacturing operations in India. This strategic move aligns with the backdrop of the Indian government contemplating stricter import regulations to boost domestic production.

Acer, acknowledging India as its second-largest market, following the United States in shipments and revenue, is set to intensify the sales of consumer notebook computers in India throughout the year. Jason Chen, Acer's Chairman, disclosed plans to collaborate with Indian manufacturing suppliers and other Taiwanese partners to bolster local production capacities, aligning with the Indian government's policy objectives.

In a report by Nikkei Asia, Chen mentioned, "Our collaboration with the Indian supplier, initiated in 2023, has been fruitful, prompting a demand for an increased variety of models and volume." He highlighted the undeniable potential for expansion in the rapidly growing Indian market.

Likewise, Asustek Computer's Co-CEO, Samson Hu, conveyed a similar commitment to enhancing local manufacturing capabilities in India. Asustek is contemplating a shift to component-level production in India, surpassing mere final assembly operations, in response to the Indian government's long-term manufacturing goals.

Over the past two years, Asustek has solidified its presence in the consumer notebook market in India, with upcoming plans to prioritise the expansion of its commercial notebook segment in the country, commencing this year.
