Automotive Cells Company (ACC) - a joint venture of Stellantis, Mercedes Benz and TotalEnergies – has joined hands with Siemens to enable sustainable battery cell gigafactory production. Automotive Cells Company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens, as per which the German technology giant will become ACC’s preferred supplier in automation, digitalization and electrification technology, enabling Automotive Cells Company to scale-up its production, maximising plant and energy efficiency.

The partnership is part of the Siemens Xcelerator open digital business platform and will make it easier and faster for ACC to progress towards its planned gigafactories at scale.

Siemens will provide ACC with access to its Digital Enterprise portfolio of hardware and software: from production design to product design, from product lifecycle management to energy management systems. As a starting point, Siemens and ACC plan to create a comprehensive digital twins of the battery and the production lines. Leveraging Totally Integrated Automation and Teamcenter software from Siemens Xcelerator, ACC will be able to better connect design and manufacturing to scale-up production.

“The emergence of a European equipment industry is a key success factor for ACC, whose ambition is to be a European leader of automotive battery cells and modules. We must facilitate the establishment of an entire battery ecosystem, covering the entire value chain. In this perspective, being able to rely on Siemens is very important for ACC. Throughout the project, Siemens Xcelerator offers the perfect set of solutions for our needs,” said Yann Vincent, CEO, Automotive Cells Company.

At the same time, Siemens is extending its footprint in the battery manufacturing industry. Siemens had previously signed several technology partnerships with leading companies showcasing its deep domain know-how in this this dynamic and fast-growing market. ACC’s gigafactories will increase the availability of high-performing and affordable EV batteries in Europe, accelerating the transformation of the automotive industry.

Cedrik Neike, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG, and CEO Digital Industries, said, “Sustainably designed and produced batteries are good for the planet and good for our business, as they power the green transition and drive new growth.  As a prime partner in the transformation of the automotive industry, it is natural for us to join forces with ACC, as we aim to jointly develop a sustainable European car battery production.”

Beyond the traditional customer-supplier relationship, the agreement between ACC and Siemens extends to cooperation in the areas of IT/OT connectivity. The MoU also covers infrastructure solutions including energy management to create a carbon net zero factory.

Born in the 2020s, Automotive Cells Company was formed for developing EV battery technology. ACC is the result of an initiative undertaken by Stellantis and TotalEnergies -together with its subsidiary Saft - joined by Mercedes-Benz, and strongly supported by France, Germany, and the European Union. ACC’s new R&D Expertise Center is already up and running in Bruges (Bordeaux, France), along with a state-of-the-art Pilot Plant in Nersac, France (Nouvelle Aquitaine). ACC’s first Gigafactory is being built in Billy-Berclau Douvrin, Hauts-de-France. Then there’s the new Applied Engineering Center and a second Lithium-ion Gigafactory planned in Germany for 2025. ACC has also announced a new Gigafactory in Termoli in Italy.

With a planned total Euro 7 billion of investment, Automotive Cells Company is putting down long-term roots across the world, securing a global network of R&D associates, industrial partners, and suppliers.
