ABB India secures contact from Netherlands-based logistics company Samskip

ABB India Limited has secured a significant contract from the Netherlands-based global logistics company, Samskip, to implement an advanced power distribution system for two groundbreaking short-sea container ships. These vessels represent a pioneering advancement in maritime technology, being among the first in the world to utilise hydrogen as a fuel source, according to ABB.

The adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology is a pivotal step in the shipping industry's pursuit of decarbonisation. ABB asserts that this technology holds immense promise, capable of substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.

In its role, ABB, a leader in electrification and automation solutions, will provide Samskip with the compact version of ABB Onboard DC Grid™ power distribution system, ensuring optimal energy utilisation on board. Additionally, ABB’s energy storage solution control, the Ability™ System 800xA, will be integrated into the project. These advancements will not only optimise safety and performance but also enable round-the-clock remote support via ABB Ability™ Remote Diagnostic Systems.

Juha Koskela, Division President of ABB Marine & Ports, expressed ABB's enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasising the project's potential to curb emissions and reduce operational costs. The two vessels, each measuring 135 meters, are being constructed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd and are scheduled for delivery in the third and fourth quarters of 2025. Notably, the project receives co-funding from the Norwegian state enterprise ENOVA. The ships will operate between Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam, covering a distance of approximately 700 nautical miles, as revealed by ABB.

Aligned with the International Maritime Organisation’s revised greenhouse gas reduction strategy, Samskip's vessels will be powered by a 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell each, with diesel generators in place as backups. ABB's innovative solutions are anticipated to enable these ships to avoid around 25,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, particularly when powered by fuel cells and using green shore power at their ports of call.

Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited, expressed pride in the partnership with ABB, underscoring Cochin Shipyard’s commitment to pioneering sustainable technology. This collaboration not only strengthens their position as an early adopter of green initiatives but also aligns with India’s vision to emerge as a global hub for constructing environmentally friendly ships.
