ABB India invests Rs 140 crore to expand LV motors capacity

ABB India expanded and modernised its Low Voltage (LV) motors manufacturing facility with an investment exceeding Rs 140 crore, reinforcing India’s role as a global hub for innovation and engineering excellence. The investment coincided with the launch of the country’s first IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors built on proven induction technology, free from rare-earth metals.

“This strategic investment was about more than capacity – it strengthened our vision for India as a global manufacturing hub,” said Stefan Floeck, President – IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB. “As demand for energy-efficient motors increased, we engineered solutions to help customers compete leaner and cleaner.”

The launch of ABB’s IE5 motors underscored its commitment to sustainability and industrial energy efficiency. With ratings from 45 kW to 1000 kW, the new range delivered reliability and high performance, even in the toughest operating environments.

Custom-built for Indian conditions, the motors operated seamlessly on both Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). Target industries included metals, cement, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and paper.

Delivering up to 40 per cent lower energy losses than IE3 motors, the IE5 range offered faster ROI, reduced total ownership costs, and longer operating life.

“These motors combined induction technology’s reliability with ultra-premium efficiency, without rare-earth metals,” said Sanjeev Arora, President – Motion Business & IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB India. “This milestone showed our commitment to supporting Indian industries with high-performance, sustainable solutions aligned with the country’s decarbonisation agenda.”

The new motors and expansion cemented ABB’s 75-year presence in India, establishing new benchmarks in energy efficiency while reaffirming its focus on sustainable growth and technological leadership.
