Smart Meters & web-based monitoring to bring efficiency in electricity management

The 8th edition of Metering India, an International seminar organised by IEEMA meter division, was held on August 8-9, 2019 at Hotel Le Meridien. The two day seminar, titled "Widening Horizons", was attended more than 530 delegates.

The seminar highlighted key challenges and held sessions on knowledge sharing dedicated to diverse aspects of metering like communication systems, emerging technologies, design and testing, and data acquisition and management.  Harish Agarwal, President, IEEMA, said, “A new range of ‘smart meters’ can bring efficiency to how India manages its electricity, by checking data-entry errors and billing efficiencies and cutting the costs of manual meter reading through web-based monitoring system”.

Ashish Tandon, Chairman- Meter Division, IEEMA said, “The Indian metering Industry is fully capable of delivering 240 million smart prepaid meters. We have all the desired capacity and capabilities to design, develop, manufacture and ship these meters from state-of-art-manufacturing units within India, which is fully aligned with Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make In India’. However, we require support from the utilities and the ministry to fulfil this vision; firstly a realistic time frame to be laid, so that the goal can be achieved practically. Secondly, consolidation of technologies is required and thirdly, realistic price expectations. If we get the right volumes, we will surely achieve the right price. Lastly, we have to move from buyer seller L1 mode to partnership mode.”

The two day session witnessed panel discussion and paper presentation on various aspects of metering segment. 22 papers were presented during the two day sessions, three papers were selected for best paper awards. Sylvain Vittecoq, Cyan Connode, Stockholm, Sweden was presented with the ‘Best Paper Award’ on ‘A model for evaluating different communication technologies for AMI’. Nimisha Chauhan, Secure Meters presented on ‘A journey towards intrastate DSM’, stood second. PK Patnaik, OPTCL stood third for his paper on ‘Practical issues & its solution note for Energy Metering System among Power Players.’

During Metering India 2019, Alok Gupta, Former Member, Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission & Member CEA was presented with the Life Time award for his contribution and remarkable services to the metering industry in India.
