India proposes Anti-Dumping Duty on Chinese glass for home appliances

The Ministry of Commerce has suggested the imposition of an anti-dumping duty, ranging up to $243 per tonne, on the import of Chinese glass used in household appliances. This measure aims to protect domestic manufacturers from the adverse effects of low-cost imports from neighboring China.

Following a complaint from a domestic player, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), an investigative arm of the commerce ministry, conducted an inquiry into alleged dumping of "toughened glass for home appliances with a thickness between 1.8 MM to 8 MM and an area of 0.4 SqM or less" originating in or exported from China. The Federation of Safety Glass, a consortium of safety/specialty glass processors, initiated this anti-dumping investigation.

Upon completing the investigation, the DGTR found that the product was being sold in India at prices below the normal market level, resulting in dumping that adversely affected domestic manufacturers. Consequently, the DGTR has recommended the imposition of a definitive anti-dumping duty on these imports for a five-year period, as stated in the DGTR notification.

Anti-dumping inquiries are typically undertaken by countries to determine if their domestic industries are suffering due to an influx of inexpensive imports. To address this issue, these countries impose anti-dumping duties in accordance with the multilateral regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO), headquartered in Geneva. The purpose of such duties is to ensure fair trade practices and establish a level playing field for domestic producers in comparison to foreign producers and exporters.

India has previously imposed anti-dumping duties on various products to combat the surge in cheap imports from different countries, including China.
