EOS unveils Al5X1, game-changing Aluminum Alloy for diverse 3D printing applications

EOS has introduced Al5X1, a heat-treatable aluminium alloy that combines high elongation and strength, eliminating the need for quenching and saving costs. By skipping the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) step, which is expensive in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processes, EOS aims to make this material popular not only in aerospace but also in challenging markets like automotive and electronics. With a ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 410 MPa and 14% elongation, Al5X1 has versatile applications.

Historically, the additive manufacturing (AM) industry predominantly used titanium (Ti64) for metal 3D-printed parts, especially in dental and orthopedic implants. Then, the industry explored Inconel for space and industrial applications, followed by aluminum alloys like AlSi10Mg and Scalmalloy, which improved part properties. Al5X1 enhances existing aluminum offerings with its ability to undergo heat treatment, electropolishing, anodisation, and inherent corrosion resistance. Additionally, it allows vivid anodisation in various colors, making it aesthetically appealing, while its fewer processing steps and quick machine turnaround enhance cost-effectiveness. Al5X1 finds applications in diverse fields such as bike components, drones, automobiles, antennas, and consumer goods like headphones.

This breakthrough material, Al5X1, is gaining attention in the industry. Sintavia CEO Brian Neff highlighted the importance of developing a higher-performing aluminium alloy, emphasising its critical role in aerospace and other industries. Dr Ankit Saharan, Senior Manager of Metal Technology at EOS, noted the material's attractiveness to OEMs in consumer electronics due to its anodisation capability and corrosion resistance.

The potential applications of Al5X1 are extensive, including 3D printed items like car switches, bike seat posts, car customisation, specialised vehicle components, and innovative vehicle production. Sintavia plans to use Al5X1 for highly complex components like heat exchangers designed for defence, space, and aviation sectors. The ability to 3D print heat exchangers represents a significant opportunity, enhancing performance and reducing mass. Complex heat exchangers, crucial in defences and space applications, stand to benefit greatly from this material. Overall, Al5X1's introduction marks a valuable addition to the industry's capabilities, offering enhanced properties and diverse applications.
