Siemens, the renowned German multinational conglomerate, is embarking on a significant initiative in India by establishing a hub dedicated to mass transit and urban transport solutions. This strategic move is fuelled by Siemens' recent milestone contract with Indian Railways, valued at Rs 26,000 crore (approximately $3 billion). The contract entails the supply and servicing of electric locomotives for freight transportation, making it the largest order ever received by Siemens Mobility in India.
Peter Koerte, the Chief Technology Officer and Chief Strategy Officer at Siemens AG, emphasised the company's intention to boost component and locomotive manufacturing within India. Siemens also maintains a site in India focused on developing innovative railway infrastructure solutions. The goal is to leverage India as a central hub for manufacturing mass transit and urban transport solutions, capitalising on the nation's burgeoning rail transit market.
India has become a pivotal market for Siemens, significantly contributing to the company's revenue. Currently employing 12,000 software developers in India, half of whom are based in Bengaluru, Siemens views the country as a vital hub for its technological advancements.
Siemens has undergone a transformation, shifting its focus from being merely a manufacturing entity to becoming a technology-driven organisation in recent years. Koerte highlighted the escalating revenue growth originating from India. He noted that while India is ranked eighth globally in terms of market size, it stands out as one of the fastest-growing markets, ranking among the top three to five geographies in terms of incremental revenue addition.
Despite geopolitical challenges such as the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Ukraine war, Siemens adheres to a global strategy of being a ?glocal? player. Koerte explained that Siemens, with its 176 years of existence, prefers to remain apolitical and adopts a multi-local approach. The company designs products for the global market while tailoring them to meet specific regional requirements. This approach has proven beneficial, enabling Siemens to navigate global uncertainties successfully. Source: Business Standard
