India targets $500 billion semiconductor manufacturing by 2030

The Indian government has set an ambitious target to achieve $500 billion in semiconductor manufacturing by the end of this decade, a fourfold increase from the current level, announced S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), during the inauguration of two advanced laboratories at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) in the city on Saturday.

The newly inaugurated facilities, the Digital India RISC-V SoC (System on Chip) Design Laboratory and the Digital India RISC-V Embedded System Design Laboratory, mark a significant leap in India's efforts to advance semiconductor technology. These labs are part of the MeitY’s Chips to Startup programme, which aims to foster innovation and research in the semiconductor sector.

Krishnan emphasised the government’s commitment to positioning India as a global leader in innovation and underscored the importance of design engineers in the Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) domain. He highlighted the significant employment potential within this sector and the need for collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers.

Dr Jayaraj Kidav, Executive Director, NIELIT (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), expressed gratitude for the government’s continued support and stated that the country’s mission is to drive research that directly addresses national priorities.

As part of this initiative, NIELIT (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology Tiruchirappalli are currently working on a project titled 'Design and Development of Ultra-low Power SHAKTI RISC-V-Based Lightweight Edge AI Processor for IoT-Enabled Healthcare Applications.'

This effort is expected to play a key role in advancing India's semiconductor capabilities and contributing to its goal of becoming a global leader in this field by 2030.
