IISc achieves breakthrough in greener recycling of high-performance polymers

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed a new, eco-friendly method for recycling high-performance polymers, offering a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to traditional methods. Samir Mandal, a PhD student working under Prof Suryasarathi Bose and Prof Subodh Kumar, explained that the innovative solution selectively breaks the Carbon-Nitrogen and Carbon-Oxygen bonds in thermoset polymer matrices, such as epoxy and vinyl ester, disrupting their network structure.

The process allows the reclaimed epoxy and carbon fibres to retain their structural integrity, making them suitable for reuse in new composites or for blending with other polymers to create different products. Prof. Bose emphasised that this method addresses both cost and environmental impact concerns associated with carbon fibre production. "This solution not only breaks down the resin but also reclaims the fabric. The fragmented epoxy can further be used as a hardener for designing new materials, advancing the industry towards a circular economy," he said.
