India’s economic growth is attracting many MNCs to set up their production bases in the country to take advantage of its cost-competitiveness. At the same time, companies - Indian as well as global - are opting for modern technolgies in their production unit and warehouses. In line with this trend, use of automation and robotics is also growing rapidly in material handling equipment industry, says Harsh Dhami, Managing Director, HVD Distributors Pvt Ltd - an importer and exporter of bearings and components that are used in various industries.

Why is Material Handling Equipment (MHE) industry important for the growth of the country?
As India is a growing market and economy, many MNCs are entering India and setting up their production base here as the labour cost and other costs are lower. So when a new unit is formed, there are lots of MHE taken into consideration to ease their production line in an organised or a systematic way.

MHE can even benefit the growth of the country or economy by exporting these products to other countries. So in a way MHE will generate foreign currency for its country.

Has introduction of GST helped the MHE industry?
GST has helped a lot to material handling equipment industry in terms of raw material procurement, in terms of selling the product PAN India with ease as there is no excise related issues from the buyers.

What are the challenges faced by the manufacturers of MHE in India?
As India is a growing market for any kind of manufacturing, material handling equipment biggest challenge is to competing with other manufacturers by maintaining consistent quality and price.

These days it is easy to start manufacturing MHE but it is difficult to penetrate the market.

What are the emerging trends in material handling equipment sector?
One of the big emerging trends in MHE sector is automation and robotics and green and clean energy sustainability.
Automation and robotics is growing rapidly as other manufacturing sectors are growing. One of the biggest consumers for automation and robotics systems is automotive sector.

Secondly, as the manufacturers understand the environmental consequences of the products they purchase, transport, etc, material handling companies are working toward reducing their energy requirements.

Are you seeing rise in usage of automation and robotics in material handling equipment industry?
Yes, as mentioned above, all newly set up manufacturing facilities have at least one type of automation or robotic system installed. On the other hand, many old companies are revamping their factories by installing automation systems to ease their work load.

HVD plans to grow by offering a basket of products that one material handling equipment manufacturer can get under one roof.
