GAIL inaugurated first green hydrogen plant in Madhya Pradesh

GAIL (Gas Authority of India Ltd) inaugurated its first hydrogen green plant in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, marking a significant advancement in the realm of new and alternative energy in alignment with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, along with Sandeep Gupta, Chairman & MD,GAIL.

The Green Hydrogen plant, as per GAIL, boasts the capability to produce 4.3 TPD of hydrogen utilizing 10MW PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) Electrolyzer units, employing the process of water electrolysis with renewable power. The hydrogen produced by this plant maintains a purity level of 99.999 per cent (by vol.) and is generated at a pressure of 30 Kg/cm2.

Initially, the hydrogen generated will be utilised as a fuel in conjunction with natural gas for internal purposes across various processes and equipment at the existing Vijaipur plant. Furthermore, there are plans to distribute this hydrogen to retail consumers in nearby regions and transport it via high-pressure cascades.

In addition to procuring renewable power through open access, GAIL is also erecting approximately 20 MW of solar power infrastructure at Vijaipur, including both ground-mounted and floating solar power plants, to cater to the green power demand for the 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, a flagship initiative of the Indian government, aims to foster the advancement and adoption of green hydrogen technologies within the country. With a target of achieving 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030, the mission signifies a significant stride towards realizing India's aspirations in the hydrogen economy.

Significant progress has been made by the government in this endeavour, with tenders awarded for incentives supporting green hydrogen production totalling 412,000 tonnes per annum. Furthermore, tenders have been issued for the establishment of electrolyser manufacturing capacity totalling 1,500 MW per annum, bolstering India's capability to produce green hydrogen on a large scale.
