Marelli Launches Next-Gen Port Fuel Injection ECUs for Global Markets

Marelli, a global mobility technology supplier to the automotive sector, has announced the launch of its new generation Port Fuel Injection Engine Control Units (PFI ECUs) for gasoline, flex fuel (ethanol, methanol, synthetic fuels) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) applications. The flexible solutions are designed to maximise energy efficiency and engine performance while addressing evolving vehicle architectures and emission regulations.

Targeted at the Brazilian, Indian and EMEA markets, the ECUs reflect Marelli’s approach to developing solutions aligned with regional requirements of carmakers. The three versions, differentiated by region-specific features, are designed, validated and produced locally to ensure optimised costs, faster implementation and dedicated support for local automakers. The portfolio builds on Marelli’s global and regional engineering and manufacturing capabilities, as well as its 20-year expertise and patented strategies in flex fuel and bi-fuel technologies.

Giovanni Mastrangelo, Head of R&D for Marelli’s Propulsion business, said “As adoption speeds for propulsion technologies vary, Marelli continues to support customers across the powertrain spectrum. In markets where internal combustion engines remain relevant, our new engine control units enable greater efficiency, emissions reduction, and versatility. This reflects our system-driven approach and know-how in vehicle control, conventional and alternative fuel injection technologies and transmission systems.”

The technology is designed from both hardware and software perspectives to manage all engine control requirements across gasoline, flex fuel and CNG applications. It supports calibration, homologation and customer-specific tuning, while the open architecture enables integration of third-party applications and allows Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) updates.

The new ECUs incorporate Infineon’s AURIX TC3x automotive microcontroller, enabling fast processing, multitasking and reliable operation. The platform also delivers strong security features, including anti-tuning protection and compliance with ISO26262 ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level) D functional safety standards, with ECU applications reaching ASIL B/C.

The ECUs feature a high number of input/output channels for precise control of injectors, valves, relays and actuators. The system can support up to eight gasoline injector drivers and four CNG injector drivers. Integrated combustion algorithms and emission control strategies help ensure regulatory compliance.

The technology also incorporates advanced diagnostics and monitoring capabilities. These include wide-range O2 UEGO (Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen) sensors for accurate air–fuel ratio monitoring, OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic II) pinpoint diagnostics, and extensive I/O capacity to manage a wide range of gasoline, flex fuel and bi-fuel applications.
