Over 1,200 companies, specialising in the production of arms and other materials pertinent to the defence sector, participated in the expo.

India's largest defence equipment exhibition, Defence Expo, was recently organised by the Industries Department of the Maharashtra government at the International Exhibition and Convention Centre at Moshi near Pune. The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of Ajay Bhatt, Union Minister of State for Defence, and Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister, Maharashtra.

The exhibition, spanning three days, was meticulously orchestrated under the ambit of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Yojana – a strategic initiative aimed at achieving self-reliance in various sectors, including defence. The overarching goal was to advocate for the domestic production of cutting-edge weaponry essential for the defence forces while simultaneously encouraging the active involvement of both small and large industries in the production processes, particularly those in the vicinity of Pune.

In an impressive show of support, over 1,200 companies, specialising in the production of arms and other materials pertinent to the defence sector, participated fervently in the Expo. This collective effort underscored a shared commitment to fortify the nation's defence capabilities through indigenous manufacturing.

The showcased exhibits at the Expo were nothing short of a testament to India's growing prowess in defence technology. From indigenously crafted tanks and protective vehicles to sophisticated missiles, air force helicopters, rocket launchers, and an array of ammunition, the exhibition provided a comprehensive glimpse into the nation's defence arsenal. In addition to the physical displays, the event featured enlightening lectures and seminars delivered by esteemed defence experts, enriching the knowledge base of attendees.

Amidst the dynamic displays and discussions, significant announcements emerged during the inauguration of the MSME Defence Expo in Pune. Devendra Fadnavis, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, seized the moment to declare an impending revision of the state's aerospace and defense manufacturing policy, initially formulated in 2017. This strategic move aimed at aligning the policy with contemporary needs and ensuring it continues to foster growth and innovation in the defense sector.

Adding another layer to this commitment, Uday Samant, the Minister of State Industries, revealed ambitious plans for the establishment of four defence manufacturing clusters in Nagpur, Shirdi, Pune, and Ratnagiri. These clusters, envisaged as hubs of innovation and production, are poised to play a pivotal role in bolstering the nation's defence capabilities and economic growth. The attendance of VR Chaudhari, Air Chief Marshal, on the inaugural day elevated the significance of the event. Interacting with participating industries, he emphasised the Indian Air Force's (IAF) forward-looking perspective, aligning with the overarching goal of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' set by the Government of India. The IAF, in a showcase of its indigenous capabilities, displayed Advanced Light Helicopter MK-IV, Light Combat Helicopter, Aakash, and SAMAR missile systems.

The IAF also went beyond static displays, actively engaging with the public through a dedicated publicity stall at the venue. This outreach initiative aimed to attract the youth, presenting them with insights into the multifaceted facets of the Indian Air Force and the diverse career opportunities it offers. The Induction Publicity and Exhibition Vehicle (IPEV) provided a near-real-life depiction of the IAF's functions and activities, further igniting curiosity among students from various educational institutions who attended the Expo.

Noteworthy exhibits at the Expo included the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, Light Combat Helicopter Prachand, Dhanush artillery gun, Field Howitzer 77 Bofors gun, T-90 Bhishma and Arjun Tanks, and the Infantry Carrying Vehicle BMP-II. The Indian Air Force's Make in India initiative found expression through the display of Samar II and the Akash surface-to-air weapon system, showcasing the nation's capability to produce advanced defence technologies locally.
