India’s Solar Waste May Reach 11 Million Tonnes by 2047

A recent study has projected that India could generate nearly 11 million tonnes of solar waste by 2047 as the country’s solar capacity continues to expand rapidly under its renewable energy goals. The growing volume of discarded photovoltaic (PV) modules, inverters, and batteries presents both an environmental challenge and an economic opportunity for recycling industries.

According to experts, India currently lacks a comprehensive framework for managing end-of-life solar equipment. The country’s installed solar capacity has already crossed 85 GW, and with the target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, waste volumes are expected to rise sharply in the coming decades.

Industry stakeholders have urged the government to establish a robust recycling ecosystem similar to the e-waste model, ensuring extended producer responsibility (EPR) and incentivising reuse of valuable materials such as glass, aluminium, and silver.

The report emphasised that effective policy intervention and investment in recycling infrastructure could turn the looming waste crisis into a green opportunity—recovering resources, creating jobs, and strengthening India’s circular economy.
