Chevron to invest $1 billion in new technology hub in Bengaluru

American energy giant Chevron is set to invest $1 billion in an engineering and technology centre in Bengaluru. The facility, named the Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Centre, or 'The Engine', marks a significant step for the 145-year-old company as it focuses on developing affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy solutions.

"This is a unique commitment in Chevron's history to build a world-class technology hub that will help deliver the innovations needed for the global energy transition," said Akshay Sahni,  Head, Chevron India. Sahni emphasised the company’s goal of giving employees meaningful work that contributes to solving the challenge of providing affordable energy while advancing a lower-carbon future.

Chevron's move aligns with the strategies of several global competitors, including Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, and Sabic, which have already established technology or digital centers in India. Notably, Shell has made significant investments in the country.

Sahni, a mechanical engineer from Punjab Engineering College with a PhD from Stanford, brings extensive global experience to his new role, having worked for Chevron in various countries, including the US, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, China, Thailand, and Bangladesh over the past 26 years. After initially telling his mother he’d return to India within two years when he left for graduate studies, Sahni is finally fulfilling that promise by relocating to Bengaluru next month, albeit 24 years later.

Chevron's $1 billion investment will be spread over five to six years, with plans to hire 600 employees across disciplines such as mechanical, civil, petroleum, and computer science by the end of 2025. The company is finalising a long-term lease for office space in Bellandur, Bengaluru’s IT corridor, with temporary facilities already in place.

The Engine will serve as a global solutions centre, supporting Chevron's operations through advanced digital technologies. "Our focus will be on establishing digital labs, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and neural networks," Sahni explained. The work at these labs will range from using AI and machine learning to analyse subsurface geology—crucial for identifying optimal locations for carbon storage and safer drilling sites—to creating digital twins of complex industrial facilities. These digital twins will be instrumental in monitoring and optimising global operations, ensuring a more reliable supply chain.

"Everything we do will be deeply rooted in AI, machine learning, high-performance computing, and robotics," Sahni emphasised. Robotics will be a key focus area for The Engine, with Chevron already deploying robots like "Spot," developed in collaboration with Boston Dynamics. This four-legged robot can navigate industrial sites, equipped with sensors and thermal cameras, to monitor equipment and identify potential issues before they escalate.
