Bharat Forge secures major ATAGS contract for Indian Army

Pune-based Bharat Forge Limited has won a significant contract as the lowest bidder in the Indian Army’s procurement of 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Valued at over Rs 60 billion, the contract designates Bharat Forge to manufacture 60% of the howitzers, while Tata Advanced Systems Limited, the second-lowest bidder, will produce the remaining 40%, as confirmed by defence sources.

This landmark order marks a boost for India's indigenous defence capabilities and reflects the country’s emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The ATAGS, which has already been exported to countries like Armenia, is set to play a critical role in bolstering India’s artillery along its borders with China and Pakistan. Both Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems are also actively pursuing export opportunities in Africa and other regions.

Expected to be finalised within the current financial year, the ATAGS contract highlights India’s commitment to advanced, locally-developed artillery for enhanced border security. The 155mm, 52-caliber ATAGS, developed by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in collaboration with Bharat Forge and Tata, is a cornerstone of the Army’s artillery modernisation program.

Following extensive trials earlier this year at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, and logistical evaluations for towing capabilities, the ATAGS is now poised for deployment, solidifying India’s artillery strength with cutting-edge, homegrown technology.
