Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been commissioned by Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars (39 trainsets of six cars each) and a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, along with five years of maintenance services. The total value for these products, solutions, and services amounts to several hundred million euros for Alstom. L&T was recently awarded the Integrated Systems Package contract by Mumbai Metro Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) for Line 4 (Green Line), encompassing rolling stock, CBTC signalling, train control, telecommunication, platform screen doors, depot machinery, and five years of maintenance. L&T has partnered with Alstom for rolling stock and signalling.

Mumbai Metro Line 4 is a 35.3 km elevated corridor between Wadala in Central Mumbai and Kasarvadavali in Thane, with 32 stations. It will be one of the city’s longest metro lines and connect the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other Mumbai Metro lines.

Ling Fang, Region President, APAC, Alstom, said, “We are honoured to be chosen for the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, further strengthening our long-standing association with Mumbai. Alstom-built trains and signalling solutions already serve other Mumbai Metro lines. This ambitious project allows us to provide best-in-class solutions to commuters and enhance the city’s infrastructure.”

Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, all 39 Metropolis trainsets, each with a six-car configuration, will be designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bangalore, manufactured at its state-of-the-art Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh, with propulsion systems produced at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies at Savli, Gujarat. The Sri City facility has an annual capacity of 480 cars and a strong portfolio, including driverless trainsets for Mumbai Aqua Line, Delhi Phase IV, Chennai Phase II, as well as Montreal and Sydney.

Alstom is a leader in mass transit and CBTC technology, with over 30 years of expertise and 190 CBTC metro lines, of which over 90 are operational worldwide. In India, 18 metro lines are equipped or underway with Alstom’s signalling solutions.

Alstom has contributed extensively to Mumbai’s metro network, including the Aqua Line, now in commercial operation, transporting over 1.6 million passengers daily. Alstom also provides Signalling & Telecom solutions for Lines 2 & 7 and signalling for Lines 7A & 9.

These driverless trains feature advanced designs offering passenger comfort and accessibility, with interior airflow cooling, wheelchair access, and bike racks. High-performance and safety are ensured with electrical braking and cybersecurity measures.

Alstom will provide FlexCare Perform maintenance services for five years for the 234 Metropolis cars. At the core is Alstom’s CBTC technology, enabling driverless operation, improving service across the 35.3 km corridor, reducing travel time, congestion, and CO2 emissions. Alstom’s rail cybersecurity solutions safeguard the network against emerging threats.

Alstom’s Urbalis CBTC, developed at Bangalore with over 1,000 engineers, will enable the highest Grade of Automation (GoA4) and be integrated with the Operation Control Centre (OCC) at Mandale depot and backup Control Centre at Mogharpada, managing train headways and safety for 39 six-car trains.

Alstom is at the forefront of urban mobility with Metropolis metro solutions, serving over 80 customers globally. It is also a market leader in rail services, supporting customers across the asset lifecycle and leading CBTC technology for more than 190 metro lines in 32 countries.
