Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility,
through its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive
Private Limited (MELPL), has secured a contract to provide maintenance services
for WAG-12B electric locomotives at Indian Railways’ Sabarmati locomotive
depot. Valued at €62 m, the contract covers the maintenance of the remaining
300 electric locomotives yet to be delivered under the original 800-unit contract
awarded to Alstom in 2015.
The contract includes all scheduled and unscheduled
maintenance activities to ensure strict availability and reliability targets
are met until February 2031. The scope comprises material supply, locomotive
washing, logistics and remote diagnostics.
This contract complements Alstom’s existing maintenance
operations at the ultra-modern depots in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and Nagpur,
Maharashtra, which currently service the first 500 locomotives using advanced
technologies to ensure high availability.
Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said: ‘It
is an honour to once again be Indian Railways’ partner of choice, reflecting
the strong legacy built by MELPL and Alstom. Over the past decade, we have
worked closely with Indian Railways to support its freight transformation
vision. We are pleased to be recognised for our maintenance capabilities and
proven reliability and availability performance.’
Fast and efficient
support to minimise downtime
As part of Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance offering,
the contract scope includes servicing of both electric locomotives and critical
depot infrastructure, along with the deployment of Prompt Response Teams
(PRTs). These teams will be positioned at strategic locations and equipped with
specialised tools and essential spares to ensure rapid response and reduced
downtime. Alstom will also continue its skill development programme under the
contract, having already trained more than 22,000 Indian Railways personnel.
Supporting India’s
green and digital mobility transition
The Prima T8 WAG-12B electric locomotives are being
manufactured under a landmark €3.5 bn contract awarded to Alstom in 2015 for
the supply of 800 fully electric, 12,000 HP double-section locomotives capable
of hauling approximately 6,000 tonnes. These high-powered locomotives play a
key role in India’s green and digital mobility transition by significantly
reducing carbon emissions compared to diesel locomotives while enhancing
freight capacity.
