ISRO, IIT-M partner to launch Centre of Excellence in Fluid and Thermal Sciences

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to establish a Centre of Excellence in Fluid and Thermal Sciences. ISRO has allocated initial funding of Rs 18.4 million to support this initiative, which will focus on advanced research for spacecraft and launch vehicle thermal management, offering students unique opportunities in space technology.

This new centre will serve as a hub for analysing, designing, and testing spacecraft components, leveraging the expertise of IIT-M faculty. Manu Santhanam, IIT-M's Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research, and Victor Joseph T., Director of ISRO’s Directorate of Technology Development and Innovation, formalised the agreement.

ISRO’s funding will equip the centre with necessary infrastructure, including equipment and consumables for ongoing research in fluid-thermal sciences. Planned research projects cover areas such as spacecraft thermal management, combustion instability in hybrid rockets, and cryogenic tank thermodynamics. Faculty from IIT-M’s mechanical engineering department, led by Professor Arvind Pattamatta, will play an active role in these studies.

Professor Pattamatta emphasised the centre’s potential to bolster India’s self-reliance in space technology, stating that the collaboration allows ISRO scientists and IIT-M researchers to make significant contributions to the nation’s space program.
