IAF clears Astra Missile production for DRDO and BDL

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has granted clearance to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the production of 200 Astra Mark 1 air-to-air missiles, enhancing India's indigenous missile manufacturing capabilities. The Astra Mark 1 missiles, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with BDL as the production partner, have received this production clearance following a recent visit by IAF Deputy Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit to Hyderabad.

During the visit, Air Marshal Dixit toured the DRDO’s Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), which spearheads the development of Astra missiles. The Defence Acquisition Council approved the over Rs 29 billion project in 2022-23, with production clearance now granted after all tests and developments were completed.

The Astra missiles will be integrated onto both the Russian-origin Su-30 aircraft and the indigenous LCA Tejas fighter jets. The IAF is supporting several indigenous missile projects, with three to four programs nearing completion, including air-to-ground missiles. The Astra program, managed by DRDO and the IAF, is progressing steadily, with future plans to test the Mark 2 variant with a range of around 130 km and to develop a long-range Astra with a 300 km strike capability.
