BHEL, Leonardo S.p.A, among the bidders for Army's Air Defence Gun Contract

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has joined forces with Italy's Leonardo S.p.A (previously known as Finmeccanica) as one of the three contenders bidding to supply air defence guns to the Indian Army. As conveyed by knowledgeable sources, this development also involves Larsen & Toubro and Advanced Weapons & Equipment India Ltd (AWEIL) of Kanpur, who are competing to develop and furnish this specialised weaponry.

AWEIL, one of the seven new defence public sector undertakings resulting from the transformation of the Ordnance Factories, is a prominent participant in this endeavour. The anticipated contract value is approximately Rs 6,500 crore.

The defence ministry requested a proposal for these air defence guns in October of the previous year, with bids scheduled for evaluation this month. The objective of these newly developed arms is to replace the existing air defence guns currently in use by the Indian Army. All competing bidders are contending on the basis of cost-effectiveness while ensuring adherence to the Army's specified localisation requirements.

This tender pertains to the supply of 220 guns and 142,000 rounds of accompanying ammunition. The stipulated service life for these guns is 25 years, with the ammunition expected to have a minimum shelf life of 10 years.

An additional government official disclosed, "The successful bidder is also poised to secure subsequent orders for these guns and their associated spare parts, not only from the Indian defence forces but also from other nations seeking similar weaponry."

Among its capabilities, the selected air defence gun must possess the aptitude to engage fighter and transport aircraft, helicopters, various types of remotely piloted aircraft or drones, cruise missiles, and microlight aircraft, among other airborne threats. Furthermore, it must exhibit the capability to traverse diverse terrains and be easily towed along paved roads.

The chosen contractor will be responsible for offering comprehensive product support, encompassing maintenance, materials, and spares, for a minimum of 25 years following the delivery of the final batch of guns. Additionally, a minimum notice period of two years prior to discontinuing the production line is mandated.
