BEML succeed in maiden Test-Firing of 1500 HP Tank Engine

Signifying a monumental leap in India's quest for self-reliance in defence technology, defence manufacturer BEML has successfully completed the maiden test-firing of India’s first indigenously-made 1500 Horsepower (HP) engine for Main Battle Tanks at its engine division in Mysuru complex on March 20, 2024.

The 1500 HP engine represents a landmark advancement in military propulsion systems, boasting cutting-edge features such as a high power-to-weight ratio and adaptability to extreme conditions like high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, and desert environments.

BEML says that with state-of-the-art technologies at its core, the engine positions India at par with global leaders in military engine manufacturing.

Addressing the audience at the inauguration of the Test Cell, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane hailed the achievement as a game-changer that would significantly bolster the capabilities of the Armed Forces.

Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing BEML's commitment to fortifying defence production in the country and serving the nation's strategic interests.

The successful test-firing marks the completion of Generation One, focusing on technology stabilisation. Moving forward, Generation Two will witness BEML producing engines for various trials at DRDO's Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment laboratory, followed by integration into actual vehicles for user testing. Initiated in August 2020, the project is structured into five major milestones, with completion slated for mid-2025.
