Bengaluru is gearing up to manufacture India's first high-speed bullet train, with BEML-Medha Servo Drives expected to produce two train rakes capable of speeds up to 250 kmph. These trains will be used for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, a major infrastructure project overseen by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) invited tenders earlier in September to build two chair-car high-speed trains. BEML has been the sole bidder for the contract, which is expected to be finalised shortly. Manufacturing will take place at BEML's Bengaluru plant, with the project slated for completion in 2.5 years. The trains, made from stainless steel, will have a design speed of 280 kmph and operate at 250 kmph.

The 508 km MAHSR corridor will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad via 12 stations, with an estimated project cost of Rs 1.1 trillion. Initially, Japanese Shinkansen E5 trains were planned for the route, but due to high costs, the Indian government opted for domestic production. BEML will construct the carbody, while Medha will develop the propulsion system, leveraging its experience with the Vande Bharat trains.

The first train is expected to roll out by December 2026, with trials on the Surat-Bilimora section of the MAHSR line. Future orders for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, as well as other high-speed corridors, are anticipated, with potential export markets in Southeast Asia and Africa.
