Hofmann CN-871 silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide is a unique material with physical and chemical properties that resist a variety of extreme service conditions. It is used daily in many demanding industrial applications where other common metals often fail. Industries choose Hofmann CN-871 because it has excellent abrasion resistance, high thermal conductivity, high strength and outstanding resistance to acids and chemicals. It also resists wetting by molten non-ferrous metals. The function of a sheath is protection of the element from abrading stream, have good thermal conductivity for proper temperature reading and ability to withstand high operating temperature and thermal cycling. Hofmann CN-871 is the ideal product for such application due its unique properties. It surpasses all common metals in refractoriness, abrasion and corrosion resistance. The high thermal conductivity of CN-871 makes it the most suitable non-metal component for thermocouple sheaths. The abrasion resistance is excellent in impinging, scrubbing and sliding abrasion service. A high performance factor can be expected when wear at high temperatures are experienced. Applications as protective sheaths for thermocouples in abrasive stream, molten metals are common. Extremely narrow components can be made with Hofmann CN-871. Thermocouple sheaths suitable for elements as low as 6 mm diameter and length as high as 1500 mm can be made. Wall thickness as low as 6 mm ensure reduced time lag in temperature readings. The sheaths can have flanges at cold end to enable easy mounting. Strength at room and elevated temperatures is exceptional. Hofmann CN-871 has fine finish, which reduces friction and wear.
