In measurement of sound level in the environment, one is invariably faced with widely fluctuating sound pressure levels. The question arises: which value should one consider for evaluation? The standard practice here is to consider the Leq over a specified duration. The Leq (Equivalent Sound Pressure Level) is a logarithmic average of all the readings obtained over the duration of measurement, and has the same units as a spot reading, viz., decibels. The term `integrating’ refers to the process of `averaging’ the various readings on a logarithmic scale. In this example, as also in cases where it is important to take the entire set of readings over the specified duration, a datalogging meter is essential.
