BHEL-EDN offers automation systems comprising of distributed digital controls, programmable logic controllers and process controllers including appropriate software solutions. Many such systems have been designed, manufactured and supplied to steel plants for rolling mills and blast furnace applications, sub-station automation system (SAS) and SCADA. To improve the reliability and availability of substations, automation systems are designed that provide an advantage of combining information technology with state-of-the-art control systems. Substation automation systems have the following features: capability to communicate with IEDs, numerical relays and energy meters, trivector meters on industry standard protocols, the status of the equipment and analog measurements can be monitored either locally or from remote load despatch centres (LDCs), control of switchyard equipment can be carried out from the control room as well as LDC, fault diagnostics, trend management, maintenance management and load shedding features, monitoring of field devices, protections, station auxiliaries and feeder parameters. Power plant switchyard SCADA is provided on the same platform as plant controls, to avail the benefits of unified automation and operation from power plant control room.
