Mechanical testing of plastics finished/semi-finished products is quite vital for determining its suitability to a particular application. Of all failure loadings impact loads probably play a major role. For sheets and films, subjecting to impact loading generally comprises of dropping a known weight from a known height and evaluating its resistance. The procedure adopts a vacuum-clamped test specimen firmly hold and a dart of known mass is allowed to fall from a fixed height with standard velocity. It is observed if the specimen shows puncture/cracks or any distinct deformations. This robust yet sleek test apparatus has all test requisites to match IS:2508 including darts of various weights. With some modifications, it can also be used for pipe testing.
