Travelling Column SPMs for Milling, Drilling & Boring


Shenoy Engineering offers Travelling Column Special Purpose Machines (SPMs) for Milling, Drilling and Boring operations. Machines with linear motion kinematics have started embracing travel column concept in preference to conventionally popular table travel concepts in custom-built large, multi axes milling, drilling and boring machine. Advantages of column travelling type machines are many: need less floor space than conventional machines; are rigid in construction and capable of better consistent accuracy; modular, segmented construction; and machines simpler and cheaper in cost. The company has developed long machines for a variety of applications like weld edge preparation, facing, bevelling, J-grooves, coordinate drilling, boring, etc. Travelling column SPMs are useful for machining of large steel plates, used in shipbuilding industry, heat exchangers, boilers, etc. These are ideal for drilling, milling, notch milling, etc., in traction components like railway tracks, CMS crossing, etc. The company has already built and commissioned machines for 14 mtr long work pieces. Segmented, modular construction, travelling column design concept has successfully overcome the dimension-barriers in linear machine building technology. Combination of case hardened guide way strips and Turcite for better wear-resistance and torsion-load resistance, automatic job feeding and aligning mechanism, automatic job clamping and de-clamping mechanism, automatic chip disposal system, coolant re-cycling, etc., are the other features of these SPMs. Motion drive options for the axes movement is elective – VFD controlled AC motors or AC servo for accurate pitch selection and for rapid homing. Of the SPMs featured here, one is in vertical configuration, of capacity: vertical axis 4 mtr x longitudinal axis 3.4 mtr x 500 mm cross axis. The second one is a Duplex travelling column milling, drilling SPM with T slot bed and hydraulically operated, automatic clamping fixtures – capability – side milling with ø 600 mm cutter and closely tolerated pitch drilling on 14 mtr length. The third machine (LH, bottom) is a large lathe bed converted into 30 ft long, linear axis milling, drilling machine for preparing deep J grooves on the large shells. The fourth is a dual head, edge milling and facing machine for 14 mtr long x 120 mm thick plate for a ship building industry. The company offers to tailor-make machines to suit to customers’ requirements at affordable price and short lead time.
