Plate Edge Milling Machine

Shenoy Engineering has developed a Plate Edge Milling Machine for the shipbuilding industry. Two plates are enjoined by welding and the welding process has critical requirement for weld edge preparation. Both the plates, to be enjoined through welding, need to have 45° chamfer for the welding to take place in a large area on one face and, it need to have parallel surfaces on the other surface, which should be free of gap. Meeting this stringent requirement, the machine has the following salient features: self-powered roller conveyor for the plates to load, position and retract plates up to 14 m (L) x 4 m (W); hydraulically operated, automatic plate clamping; dual milling heads (both 10 HP) – one for facing and the other for edge milling application; ±45° tilting facility for the milling head, operated mechanically through sector gear and pinion; automatic chip conveyor with in-built coolant system on the entire 14 mtr length; auto-cycle through the combination of latest Allen Bradley PLC and limit switches; entire process of plate positioning, clamping, machining, de-clamping, plate retraction, homing, chip disposal, etc., are sequential and logically controlled by the PLC; VFD based variable feed system for all the axes movement and also for the milling heads; step-less variable spindle speed ranges from 80-700 RPM through a combination of stepped gearbox and vector VFD; column-attached, moving, operator's cubical; and combination of case hardened guideway strips and turcite for longitudinal axis for the best wear-resistance and smooth traverse motion of the column.
