Huge flanges, trammels, etc., need the end flanges to be machined, after welding, for a good flatness and parallelism for avoiding the possibilities of leakage from the gaskets. Conventionally, this is done by labourious, manual blue-matching, using hand grinders. Flange miller can do this operation effortlessly and in considerably less time. A 20 HP milling head is mounted on a vertical slide unit for setting the depth of cut. The cross traverse mechanism in the arm helps positioning the milling head to the varying diameters of the flanges. There are different sizes of detachable centre blocks to suit to the varying lengths/heights of the flanges. The radial arm is located on the central rotary drive unit, which consists of extra heavy-duty pairs of taper roller bearings. While the cross feed traverse and vertical feed traverse are through VFD controlled motors and gear boxes, the rotary drive is through a AC servo motor for accurate positioning of the spindle for coordinate drilling operation, after milling. Servo drive ensures repeated pitch accuracy in drilling. A unique, self-adjusting type counter balancing mechanism provides continuous balancing for the moving ram. All male sliding surfaces are provided with case hardened guideway strips and the female sliding surfaces are applied with turcite lining for wear-resistance and smooth movement. While the rotary drive bearings are lubricated for life, the other rotating and sliding surfaces are continuously lubricated at regular intervals by an automatic lubrication system.
