In addition humidity, condensation, temperature variations and faulty/leaking fuel tank caps cause water to accumulate in fuel tanks. Presence of water in diesel seriously affects engine performance, causing engine misfire, surge, poor governor regulation, increase in fuel consumption and power loss. Modern engines which are designed to have very close clearances, higher fuel injection pressures and to comply with more stringent pollution standards, are more susceptible than ever to water corrosion. Formation of sulfuric acid (water combined with sulphur fuel in) corrodes valves, valve guides, cylinder liners, piston rings, fuel injection pump elements and injectors. The existing fuel filters are designed to remove solid contaminants and are incapable of removing water from diesel fuel.
