SMI/Swastik ball valves are designed to API-6D specifications, which stipulate the design requirements of petroleum and petrochemical plants, where very severe services are demanded. The valves are supplied in two models, full bore and reduced bore. They are operated by a handle and a quarter turn completely shuts or opens the valve. Compared with the handwheel operated gate valve less time is required to manipulate the open/shut mechanism. In the construction of the ball valve the ball is suspended between the two seat rings and the sealing force is directly proportional to the line pressure. Abrasion of seat rings is less and lubrication is necessary. Gland packing as well as seat rings can be repacked without any special tools. The ball valves have an unimpeded flow passage and the pressure loss is almost negligible and such valves are used for slurry and viscous fluids. They can be used for almost every type of fluid such as liquids, gases, powders and even granular materials. If subjected to very high temperatures, a ball valve's seat ring may be damaged by melting and the valve will then become useless for sealing the liquid. In order to retain a tight sealing, under high temperature conditions, an anti-heat design is provided. This includes metal-to-metal touch seat sealing with the provision of metallic secondary seats.
