It works on the principle of Ultrasonic Pulse Echo technique. Pulse of frequency 2 Mhz is transmitted from the front surface and received after reflection at rear surface. Transit time for to and fro path is measured electronically and converted to the thickness of the material. Time is proportional to the thickness of the material and velocity of ultrasound in the material. Velocity of ultra sound is different for different materials.
