Stainless Martensitic Chromium Steel

Stainless Martensitic Chromium Steel

Bohler M303 Extra is a stainless martensitic chromium steel, offering excellent toughness, corrosion and wear resistance. It is characterized by improved machinability and polishability. Developed for improved homogeneity over 1.2316 by reducing delta ferrite in the matrix, ensuring excellent usage properties, Bohler M303 Extra is available in two hardness ranges: 290-330 HB and 360-400 HB. The alloy uniquely fulfils the demands that many mouldmakers have, and are not being addressed. Providing good polishability without having to be remelted, Bohler M303 Extra saves on cost for the alloy while still filling the demands of the application. It is a pre-hardened grade, which saves on heat treatment costs and the concerns that most mouldmakers have about the heat treatment sequence and how well that process is performed. It provides a grade ready to be machined and put into operation, which saves time and money for the mouldmaker. The major applications where this grade can be used is in plastic extrusion tooling where better corrosion resistance is required than a resulphurised stainless alloy can provide. It also should be considered for plastic injection moulding and rubber moulding where the toolmaker in the past has had to use a 420 remelted stainless because he wanted better polishability than a re-sulphurised, free machining stainless could provide, but wanted a pre-hardened grade and did not have it. It also can be considered for holder applications where surfaces of the holder are required to have good polish ability and yet the toolmaker would want decent maintainability in other areas of the holder.
