PTFE Wear Strips

PTFE Wear Strips

Chemplast offers a range of Keylon? PTFE Wear Strips, which act as guides for metallic pistons and rods in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. They are also commonly used in maintenance free applications, where the dry-running properties of PTFE are utilised. The thickness, width and length of the tape bearing can be made-up to suit a given application. The standard grades are: Keylon PF1240 bronze filled PTFE, Keylon PF1325 carbon filled PTFE and Keylon PF3940 green coloured bronze filled PTFE. Different fillers or percentages are available on request. Properties of filled PTFE wear bands: high load bearing capabilities; break away and dynamic friction are low (? = 0,5); no stick-slip, even when operating under heavy loads and low linear velocities; self lubricating, therefore pistons won't seize, even when oil films are disrupted by vibrations; sliding metallic interfaces do not make contact; therefore, materials for piston, cylinder rod and rod guide may be selected from a wide range of materials; more play between diameters is permissible (depending upon seal type and on maximum operating pressure); this leads to cost savings because of wider tolerance and surface quality ranges for pistons and rod guides; in a dirty environment, the wiper action of the wear strip will catch contaminants on the top surface and therefore prevent damage to sealing and contact areas; if the wear strips are correctly designed and installed, there is no danger of hydrodynamic pressure build-up at the wear strips; this obviates expensive machining of spiral flutes or drilling longitudinal holes to relieve drag pressure; and pressure waves caused by shock loads and vibrations are damped by the wear strips before reaching the sealing area; this reduces the danger of seal destruction.
