Hebenkraft, specialising in EOT cranes and materials handling systems, also designs and builds ladle tilting systems. The company recently developed a 45-T ladle tilting machine for Sesa Goa Ltd, Amona. It consisted of Cantilever frame hinged on two pins supported on vertical columns mounted on foundations. The hot metal ladle containing the liquid metal is placed on the frame by EOT crane. The ladle is held in place by a special hook attachment and guide bars. The hinged frame is slowly tilted along with the ladle by a drive system consisting of motor, planetary gearbox, intermediate gearboxes and more than 3-m diameter open gear and pinion system. The ladle is tilted through 110? to feed metal into a launder which can in turn feed a pig casting unit or moulds in a foundry. The speed is controlled by a fourstep master controller to give total tilting through 110? from 20 to 60 min. The system also incorporates a fast return speed for empty ladle which is twenty times faster through a separate motor and a controller. In the absence of tilting machine, the feeding of metal is done by tilting the ladle through auxiliary hoist mechanism. This engages the hot metal crane for the entire tilting operation. By use of such ladle tilting machine the hot metal crane is immediately freed from feeding the casting unit and can be utilised for the next tapping or other duties. This would immediately improve the PRODUCTivity of the steel melting shop. Another special feature of this ladle tilting system is that the axis of tilting is at the sprout of the ladle. Because of this the metal always falls through the same height and no adjustments are required to be done by the operator.
