Harmonics generating non-linear loads such as arc furnaces, induction furnaces, arc welding equipment, variable frequency drives, UPS systems, battery chargers, computers, etc., are rapidly increasing. Impedance of the capacitors decreases drastically for higher harmonic currents, presenting the shortest path for them. The effect of non-linear and time varying loads can be further amplified by resonance conditions, which will cause distortion of supply voltage in the network. These harmonic currents added to the fundamental current produces dangerous overloads on the capacitors, leading to premature failure. This detuned filter presents an inductive load for the network avoiding resonance. Reactors for detuned filters are specified by p% factor called the detuning factor. The tuning frequency is usually set at a value between the fundamental frequency and the frequency of the lowest order harmonic present, which is usually the 5th harmonic. The company offers a standard range of reactors from 5 to 100 kVAr with p=7%, meaning a resonant frequency of 189 Hz for 50 Hz network. This will avoid resonance to 5th harmonic and above.
