ESE Air Terminals consists of 2 armatures – one connected to ground and the other remains at atmospheric potential. During a storm the potential difference between them becomes considerable. The potential difference is the power device for the lightning arrester’s internal circuit. When the potential difference between the 2 armatures exceeds a certain value, which occurs during the time of lightning, the lightning arrestor emits an upward streamer which progress till it meets the downward leader (lightning) forming a discharge path and bringing the lightning to the arrestor for safe transmission to earth.
