Disc Magnet Stepper Motors

Disc Magnet Stepper Motors

Stepper motors are mostly driven open loop. Timing of the step pulses is determined by the controller, the motor is supposed to follow without losing synchronism. Steppers are in fact natural positioning devices not requiring feedback. However, at speeds above 2,000 RPM their design leads to high iron losses. Therefore, they are mainly used in low speed applications. The escap disc magnet stepper motor is an exception to that rule. Its design is totally different from conventional stepper technologies and generates rather low iron losses even at high speed. For this reason, it is capable of fast incremental motion, successfully competing with DC servo and BLDC motors, if an optical or magnetic encoder is used to close the commutation loop (and this by using a standard stepper driver). Portescap steppers from size 17 and up are available with such an encoder.
