Plant and equipment erection in various installations such as power plants, refineries, etc., is an important activity. In most cases enough planning is not done as most people assume conventional aids to achieve the goals. Often with standard mobile cranes, the operation becomes expensive and sacrifices safety. For small scale operations mobile cranes and other standard equipments are sufficient. Complex projects involving large quantities and heights can be economically and safely handled using custom designed equipments. In power plants, huge quantities of steel structures and equipment go into the construction of steam generators and generating houses. Work is conventionally handled using high capacity mobile cranes, which are expensive in capital costs as well as operations. In the past tower cranes were employed. These are also expensive pieces with reach limitations. Innovative design of a gantry crane straddling the boiler plant or power house is a cost effective and safe method. The company employed the same way back to install 40 T to 50 T capacity cranes in a shipyard using a self erecting gantry and in a limited work place without disturbing ship building operations in the vicinity and without any mobile crane. Recent applications include pump house and surge reservoirs involving excavation up to 110 m and areas of size 30 m x 100 m. It is normal practice to use tower cranes. Tower crane with jib of 30 m and capacity of 10 T is expensive. Gantry crane with 10/20 T capacity is installed over in the pits. Excavators weighing 20 T in self-weight are lowered into the pit to load the excavated materials and withdrawn to the top, while blasting operations are under taken. 10 T muck buckets are handled out of the pit to load the tippers on top with increased speed.
