The friction surface on either side of a clutch plate ensures transmission of power from the engine to the wheels by means of the pressure exerted by the pressure plate. With the pressure plate exerting pressure, the clutch plate connects the two shafts (one from engine and another from the gearbox) so that they can either be locked together and spin at the same speed. Like wise the clutch also facilitates that the two shafts are decoupled and spin at different speeds once the clutch pedal is pressed.
