Activated Carbons

Activated Carbons

Shiva Aqua Enterprises offers Activated Carbons. Activated carbon is one of the most widely used medias for water treatement around the world. Activated carbon is used as a scavenging media to remove chlorine, trihalomethanes, pesticides, detergents and hydrocarbons. Chlorine is an oxidizing agent that is used widely as a disinfectant in drinking water and trihalomethanes are a biproduct of chlorine and chloramines. These chemicals negatively affect water taste and are therefore commonly removed in drinking water and by restaurants, bottling plants and food processing businesses. Activated carbon has tremendous surface area on both the external surface as well as an internal network of pores which allow it to adsorb larger organics molecules. Activated carbon is a porous material that removes organic compounds from liquids and gases by a process known as “adsorption.” In adsorption, organic molecules contained in a liquid or gas are attracted and bound to the surface of the pores of the activated carbon as the liquid or gas is passed through. The primary raw material used in the production of the Company’s activated carbons is bituminous coal which is crushed, sized and processed in low temperature bakers followed by high-temperature furnaces. This heating process is known as “activation,” and develops the pore structure of the carbon. Through adjustments in the activation process, pores of the required size for a particular purification application are developed.
