Indore’s RR CAT plans AI-driven innovations in welding

The Indian government is poised to elevate new innovations such as welding technology using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), with the tech-savvy Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RR CAT) spearheading this initiative, as reported by the Deccan Chronicle. The news report suggests that the government is considering investing over Rs 100 crore towards this endeavour. The proposal from RRCAT aligns with the government's AI vision in Amrit Kaal and has already secured approval at the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) level, according to a senior official at RRCAT during a recent welding conference in Indore.

This governmental move is anticipated to greatly benefit small businesses, particularly MSMEs and startups, by enabling them to achieve production efficiencies and contribute to the nation's sustainability at a minimal cost. At the Startup Mahakumbh (held from March 18-20, 2024), Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended India's youthful entrepreneurial spirit, highlighting the rapid growth of the startup ecosystem. He emphasized that through initiatives like Startup India, innovative ideas are being nurtured, linked with funding sources, and supported with educational institution incubators.

During the previous budget announcement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman disclosed plans for a Rs 1-lakh crore corpus, offering 50-year interest-free loans to encourage private sector investments in research and innovation, particularly in emerging sectors. In line with this strategy, RR CAT stressed the importance of fostering an ecosystem where smaller industries collaborate closely with national research labs to leverage their expertise, knowledge, and experience.

Abhay Kumar, head of the Design & Manufacturing Technology Division at RR CAT, noted the necessity of incentivizing research labs for their diligent efforts and timeliness in meeting project deadlines. RR CAT is also actively supporting three Indian industries through collaborative incubations via Atal Incubation Centres (AIC-p-Hub) at RR CAT. These collaborations encompass diverse areas such as start-up metal & membrane development involving advanced welding techniques in materials like titanium and stainless steel, benefiting industries such as Godrej and Electronic Devices Worldwide.

Kumar elaborated on RR CAT's groundbreaking welding technology, highlighting the significant benefits of incorporating nitrogen into shield gas for stainless steel welds. This enhancement not only improves fatigue, creep, and corrosion resistance but also extends the service life of pressure equipment, thereby aiding SMEs in meeting production targets and bolstering the country's economic sustainability. Such innovations underscore the symbiotic relationship between research institutions like RRCAT and industries, ensuring mutual growth and progress.
